100 Steps Challenge

This afternoon, I took the 100 Steps Challenge but changed it to 100 Steps times 6 Challenge. The challenge was to walk, camera in hand, for 100 steps. At the 100th step, stop and take a picture where you are. I decided to take a walk and see what photo set I could create by taking a picture every 100 steps. I realized, as I looked back over the 60 pictures I ended up taking, I had a green theme going on... except the last one...

First 100 steps: Wall across the street from our apartment building.

Second 100 steps: A tree stump with plenty of character.

Third 100 steps: A flower box filled with winter-worn plants.

Fourth 100 steps: A metallic-green painted fence.

5th 100 steps (maybe 2 extra to get inside to order my coffee): Chandelier.

And finally at home. One last picture to complete the circle. A yummy espresso chocolate cupcake. I've been thinking of it all week!

Picnik My Pictures

While reading through blogs this morning, I found a reference to Picnik, a site that can be used to edit pictures (a little easier than Photoshop). I'd never heard of it, but the photographer's pictures are wonderful, so I knew I had to try it out! Here's my first creation. Now I'm heading out to take the 100 Step Challenge posted on Shutter Sisters yesterday. (Book club plans kept me from pulling out my camera yesterday after work... I had a lovely time again, meeting 4 new girls and enjoying a few bottles of wine and many laughs.) I think I'm going to do a few rounds of it and see where I end up around the neighborhood. I hope I end up at the coffee shop getting a wonderful warm drink and an espresso cupcake. I'll be back with pictures soon!

Friday Fill-In: The Second

First round was last Friday. (Click here...) Originally pulled from the Friday Fill-Ins blog. Join the fun!

And...here we go!

1. I'm tired, I'm excited to sleep in, I can't wait for 3 p.m.

2. Why do I have the desire to buy a new lens for my camera and not have any money?

3. How does this camera work, anyway?

4. Every morning, I put 2-30 minutes snoozes on my alarm clock.

5. I consider myself lucky because it's FRIDAY.

6. One day we’ll see transformations in education that will better support the learning of our children.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to book club with the girls (even if I didn't read the book this month), tomorrow my plans include brunch (I'm sure with a few friends) and Sunday, I want to sleep in and then hang out with Mr.!

Lilies, Rosemary, Bonsai

I have a few more pictures from the Botanical Garden to post. I should be in bed. I've been having a harder time waking up as the week wears on... I'm sure the late hours I've been feeling the need to stay awake for do not help matters. But none the less, instead of snuggling up in bed, I'm on my computer for one last post... It'll only take a second...

Lilies inside. I can't wait for the lilies outside. There is a wonderful garden area at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden filled with Lilies. Last time I was there, the lilies were breath-taking.

This was Mom's favorite part (or a top on her list...) She actually said I could just leave her there! Above, she's very happily taking in the scent of Rosemary... and below, she found a piece that had fallen off the plant to bring along home. It was a nice little nook in one of the pavilions.

Happily, she holds a small bag with postcards for family and friends (sending New York greetings), a list of cacti (or cactuses, if you prefer), and a twig of rosemary for her nose's delight.

I love the purple glow of these flowers as they catch the sunlight. I also captured bokeh in the background.

Such brilliant colors. I took many, many pictures of these flowers.

Beautiful mini-trees in the Bonsai Museum. There were so many different trees on display.

The Bonsai room. I loved how this one was growing out of its own mini mound of moss on a rock platform.

This one stood at the entrance. A special tree on its own stage. The blooms glowing and capturing the attention of all who enter.

As we walked through the Japanese garden, I was taken by the calm of the water and the perfection of the reflection.

I'm Feeling Hopeful. Green.

Another sign of the warmth and life coming. I need these signs.... I must have these reminders. I survived January and February rather surprisingly this year. Maybe I still have the excitement of the city running through my veins.

Seeing the buds was beyond a surprise. The thought of life coming back to the city, back to the world around me surprises me, excites me this year. Maybe I'm more hopeful than I thought. Maybe this year is better than past years, despite how down some aspects of my normal everyday life are (job)... Other aspects are absolutely amazing... New husband, new friends, new experiences, new home, new ways to express myself (New camera!).

Actually I must be hopeful... the neighborhood I work in is rather dirty with trash and rundown buildings... and for a moment, as I waited for the bus today, I actually felt like it'd be a pleasant place with a few green leaves and some warmer weather.

Even better. Today is Wednesday. I'm halfway through the week. We are almost greeting March. The sun is keeping its presence until after 5 p.m. (which seemed like it came out of no where staying up extra late for us, brightening our days a while longer...) So here's wishing you all a bright and hopeful day... an enjoyable ending to February and a warm welcome to March.

Witch Hazel

This bright yellow confetti-looking flower was seen a couple times last week. First, on Monday's trip to Central Park where I attempted to take an over-exposed picture. Then, we saw it again Friday at the Botanical Garden (I'm pretty sure it's the same...) looking a little happier and healthier. Some detective work, and I've found the answer to what exactly this yellow mystery is (ha ha, I think)... Witch Hazel. Thanks to Wikipedia.

What a charm to see Spring colors in this flowering tree. I wouldn't mind having one of these in my yard... If I had a yard.

Botanical Garden Fends Off Spring Fever

Someone (sorry I can't remember who or seem to find the blog entry) recently posted pictures of a trip to a botanical garden. It seemed like such a wonderful treat in the middle of winter. I've been craving spring to the extremes, mostly I'm tired of seeing dead trees... I'm ready to see life. I'm ready to see green. And I'm ready to experience NYC in the spring, the one season I've yet to meet.

I realized the Brooklyn Botanical Garden was a perfect solution to bide my time until Spring Fever hits at its strongest. Even more encouraging, Brooklyn Botanical Garden is offering free admission for weekdays during winter!! So, after turning in my stack of already late books (twice renewed), Mom and I walked up past the library and into the garden.

Along the path to the Steinhardt Conservatory I was happy to find a few buds and even a leaf beginning to grow! I've been sending this little guy happy thoughts since I saw him!

Surviving the winter in true winter colors.

Immediately upon arrival in the Conservatory, we were greeted by these beautiful and fragrant orchids. My grandmother had orchids at her house last time I visited. I've been asking Seth for one for a while now... this picture and the memory will have to suffice for now. (I'd probably kill it anyway, especially with the way my house plants are currently looking.)

The Calliandra Emarginata. Brilliant color. (By the way, I don't happen to know the name of this flower off the top of my head, just saw it on this link along with other flowers blooming this month!)

Cactus from the Desert Pavilion. Stepped in here after a nice lunch of split pea soup and tomato basil soup from the cafe in the Conservatory.

A desert flower.

Into the Tropical Pavilion. The heat and humidity made my memories of summer seem more real. My camera lens quickly fogged over with the drastic change in temperature, making this picture seem dreamy-like.

Mom was so happy to go with me as we explored the city. She was also wonderfully patient as I snapped and snapped picture after picture (about 1,200 total for the week...) She even let me snap a few of her!

Happy in the heat! Sweating by the end and ready to walk on to other cooler areas, but none the less, I'm still ready for warmer weather... Another post of pictures from the Botanical Garden to come... for now, I'm off to bed!

No Sparing the Gus

For some reason, I've only recently realized how much I love asparagus and how much Seth loves it as well (I think he knew prior to today!). Last week, while walking by this wonderful fresh veggie and fruit market, we decided to stop in and get a few things for our dinner... asparagus being one. With plenty left over from the yummy salad, I decided tonight I'd boil them up before they went bad in the back of my fridge (as forgotten food tends to go when pushed to the back of the fridge...)

On a side note, I've always had terrible luck with finding good avocados at the market we shop at. It is probably my only major complaint of the place. After getting sub par avocados, I stopped back in tonight to find soft, perfect feeling avocados sitting right on top of the normal pile... to my shock (never felt them give when I squeeze!) I bought some up and made guacamole for Mr. and me to go with our asparagus and home-made New Way burgers! Maybe an interesting mix of food, but I was very satisfied eating three of my favorite foods on a Monday night!

Bergdorf Goodman... My Favorite Windows

Bergdorf Goodman has me hooked. Their windows have impressed me twice in the last two months. Last week, after our trip to the American Girl Place, we continued north on 5th Avenue with Bergdorf Goodman windows as our next stop. On my window tour before Christmas, Bergdorf Goodman had some of my favorite and most beautiful window art. They continue to impress me.

Framing thought.

Framing stilettos.

Paintings of bunnies. Many paintings of bunnies.

Treasures

My stepmom left Saturday morning. I think I've been moping around since. The end of June/beginning of July was the last time I spent time with my family (except for the 2 day-trip visits from Dad last summer). I saw almost everyone (at our wedding) and then moved states away to New York. Seth and I have gotten into our lives here in the city, and I think I did a really good job of not quite realizing how much I really missed my family. (Maybe some more of you should come visit soon -- let me know if you are interested. I have dates in April, July, and August!!! Plane tickets for April weren't too bad last I checked... HINT! HINT!)

Tomorrow, I'll be back to work and everything will probably be back to normal by the end of the week... but I'm sure I'll think back over our last week and the visit from my stepmom. I have a few more posts to add from her trip, including the Botanical Gardens, Central Park, our sweet treats at Magnolia Bakery, and a few other fun moments we shared!

Here are a few of the treasures Mom found while here (minus the button, it fell of her sweater). She also found the fun red pot these treasures are placed in. Some of those rocks are from the Brooklyn Bridge Park, others from Central Park.

American Girl Place

One of the few definite destinations my stepmom had when she arrived for her week stay was the American Girl Place for my youngest sister. Since Em didn't get to see it herself, I took pictures and am creating a special blog post just for her. (Maybe in the future she can actually come and see it in person... *Hint, hint!) So Em, please bring your mommy back with you, and I'll take you to this store as soon as you arrive!

My baby sister has two bitty baby twins. Here's one like her twins, waiting for a child's love.

Bitty Baby in the Bitty Baby High Chair with all the other Bitty Babies... and a Bitty Baby Teddy Bear.

The walls were decorated in pretty girl colors with quotes of encouragement!

American Girl has changed so much since I was younger. I remember when I first started reading the American Girl books. Kirsten was the first girl I read and loved.

The covers of the books are much different. They were creamy white when I was younger, and I'd get them from the Scholastic Book order. I still own my small collection of American Girl books...

Felicity was another one of the American Girls I read and loved. I would have given anything to have a real American Girl doll.

With the addition to the Bitty Baby, you can also get the doll that looks like you. So many options... Sadly, there wasn't really a doll that looked like me.

Even cooler, when you get your doll, you can bring it to the American Girl Place and get her hair done just like you would if you went to the salon! Imagine your job as a doll hair stylist... So what do you do? I style hair... doll's hair. (I wonder if you have to have a license to do doll hair?)

There is also a Photo Studio where you and your doll can get your picture taken and they print it out like a cover of an American Girl magazine, which I think is totally cool! O, and if your doll gets sick, you can bring it to the hospital located in the American Girl Place. Click here for details for information as you prepare your doll for admittance to the doll hospital!

I want this book. I know, I'm an adult, but I still want it. Hopefully our first child will be a girl. :) Then I'll feel ok about getting this book!

Last, but definitely not least... The American Girl Llama. I almost walked out the store without a picture of this soft stuffed animal. Momma would have gotten me for that! :) Something about the llamas... Maybe it's to blame on whoever found this youtube video. (Dad? Trish? Kev?) If you havent' seen the llama video, click here. You must watch the whole thing. O... and while I was looking for the link to the llama song, I found this funny version of the llama song called the Obama Llama song.
