Snow Snow Snow

Some New Yorkers aren't very happy with the slowness of the city to get the snow taken care of... I don't think I have an opinion, other than I wish the path between the trashcan and me was cleared because my paper recycling is OVER flowing. (Not that I could probably fit it in, the paper one looks full and I am SURE they didn't stop to pick it up in the wee hours of this morning... all things considered.)

On my walk to the Coop at around 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon, I took a few photos... Thought it was interesting to see the progress of our hood after this storm...
Most roads were not cleared... The main avenue was and the 2 roads around the hospital were drivable (not completely cleared though). An ambulance is stuck on this road...

People were still using the roads to walk on, sled on, play on. I heard one dad ask his kid if she wanted to walk up the street or the sidewalk... Such a cool opportunity for kids to walk in the space they never get to! Of course she chose street!

Some sidewalks were completely cleared (I loved those)... Some were not so much... My toes don't love those.

There was still a but stuck on 7th Avenue. So crazy to think someone was driving that and then had to abandon it in the middle of the blizzard. Hope they didn't have far to go to get to warmth cause getting home in that blizzard couldn't have been an easy task.

FAVORITE: Visits from Old Friends

One of my all time favorite things is seeing old friends, and I'm in luck! Right now, flying somewhere high above between here and Chicago, one of my friends is on his way! Hans and I have known each other since we were middle schoolers. We became closer friends in high school and remained friends in college, and obviously well after college. Being so far away and not heading home for many holidays, I don't get to see him as often.

He's up here for our college football team's bowl game! Way excited that the first bowl game I'm attending is in my beloved city!! (Although, I'm not looking forward to heading to the Yankee Stadium stop - It's been a long while since I've done that commute and can't say I miss it... but for the sake of PURPLE, I'll SUCK IT UP!!)

Playing in the Snow

Late yesterday afternoon, I ventured back out into the snow for a little bit of playing. I met my nephew and sister-in-law up the street.

Despite the wind, the playing commenced.

The snow was especially deep and soft. There was no standing on the top of a drift... You instantly sunk in, deep.

People continued using the streets more than the cars did (Did anyone see the photos of the cars that just ended up stranded in the middle of the roads...?? Crazy!)

A little more snow art to enjoy. It's amazing what the wind does to the snow - reminded me of the rocks in Moab.
My toes were FROZEN by the end of my second tour in the snow. Today, I bought the proper snow boots. They won't make it here in time to be used during the remaining snow days of this storm, but next time, I'll be prepared (& so will Sethy! No more shoveling snow in tennis shoes!)

Snow Day: A Photo Walk

Seth's Attempt

Upon waking this morning, we were greeted with a window half covered in snow (see previous post ;). It seems to have stopped snowing from the sky, but the wind is still blowing it. Luckily for me, I had no worry about getting to work, being on winter break right now (sad missed opportunity of a snow day though). Seth, on the other hand, did his usual morning get-ready, and off he went. About 5 minutes later, he's back upstairs telling me to come see how much snow we have.

The front of our house hasn't been shoveled, except what Seth started shoveling to get himself out. In spots there's a good 15 inches, up to my knees. He started shoveling and made it out to the sidewalk. The problem was that no one has really started shoveling their walks (except the one lone brownstone above). So Seth decided to shovel out to the road and just walk down the road toward the subway.

He made it. Off I sent him down the road (in his tennis shoes -- what kind of Midwesterner goes anywhere without a good pair for boots? Seth and I both have feet that are quite ill-prepared for this kind of weather! You can also see that his hands are glove-less and his head is hat-less). I'd just made it back upstairs and sat down at my computer with my warm mug of coffee when I get a call from him. He's down the block but headed back up because he forgot his wallet! When I met him in the road, he decided he needed to come up and get his hat and check his email to see if his boss sent something about working from home for the day.

All said and done, he got ahold of his boss and is saving the hassle of blowing snow, trekking through drifts in tennis shoes, and subways that aren't running and just working from home today!

Now I'm wondering what kind of adventure Aisha (a good friend from college) is in for as she boards a bus today and heads for the City! I'm hoping the snow doesn't keep her from getting here... It will definitely affect our plans - but the city is good at getting snow cleared quickly, so hopefully it won't change too much!

Morning After

Isn't it wonderful!!

But I am sure this guy doesn't...

But I still love it!!!! Drifting up to our knees in places and still
snowing away!!!

Love It!!!

Lunar Eclipse

I didn't even realize there was a lunar eclipse tonight until I was reading a new blog I found (& absolutely love)... I set our alarms and out into the freezing cold night Seth and I went. I don't think I've ever seen a lunar eclipse before... it was beautiful and amazing!

Is it WINTER?!

P.S. It SNOWED a LITTLE bit last night! Enough to add it to the calendar as a day to remember for December 2010!

P.S.S. It's only 7 degrees warmer here than Anchorage, Alaska. Brrrr! Dad I'm kind of feeling the chill you do... minus the day darkness, minus the amount of snow (at least I assume you have more than a light covering there).

It's Almost Worth It

The sunset tonight at about 4:58 pm when I came across the Manhattan
Bridge on the Q train. It was beautiful and surprising as I assumed
the darkness would have overtaken the sky completely at that point.

The cold 20 degree weather will be easier to handle now as I trek
across the neighborhood to get home.

Anyone else have any beautiful sunsets? They are getting harder to
catch as the days get shorter and shorter... And they happen as I'm
underground making my way home. (By the way, Winter Solstice is next
week. We are getting excited for our special celebration coming in
honor of it at work. If you have any fun ideas for ways to celebrate
it, please share :)

Yum! Yum! Bread in 5!

Bread in 5, as in bread in 5 minutes!

I don't necessarily consider myself an amazing cook (striving to be, though). And making bread just sounds a bit out of my ability... I'd had this yummy artisan bread many a'times - anytime we eat at my sister-in-law and brother-in-law's, Jac makes it... And it ROCKS. She sent me the recipe MONTHS ago... but it's long and scary. I'd bought the ingredients, but never attempted. Until yesterday. Let me tell you... I am shocked at how truly easy this bread is to make & it's so yummy I can hardly believe I had anything to do with it!

Here's the link: Artisan Bread in 5 minutes

Just to give you the short and the sweet of it (it's really much easier than the long recipe lets on...):

1. Mix first 4 ingredients & let rise for 2 hours. Decide if you'll bake or refrigerate.
2. Pull of grapefruit size chunk of dough. Put on flat, cornmeal covered surface for 40 minutes before baking. 20 minutes before baking, preheat oven at 450 with baking stone inside and shallow pan (to eventually hold water) inside.
3. Put dough in oven & water in shallow pan. Bake 30 minutes or until brown (knock on the bottom of the bread, if it sounds hollow, you're done.)
4. EAT IT!

It really is that easy. (**Thanks Jac!)

Rainy Day in Brooklyn

The view out our living room window... It's a tad rainy today! We'd made plans to meet some friends for brunch in Dumbo, and the thought of heading out into this weather to subway it over made me kind of blahh! Until they text to offer a ride :)

We haven't seen the couple we are meeting up with for soooo terribly long! They live in Queens and even though we have mutual friends, we still don't see each other often. I'd invited them to Seth's surprise dinner last weekend, but a stomach bug kept them home.

Our brunch destination is Bubby's in Dumbo. It is located between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges and has the most amazing views. I had always admired it, but only recently ate dinner there with a good friend. She's using it as her wedding venue (when hearing about how amazing it is for a wedding venue, I kinda got the urge to have another wedding - with Seth, of course :)

Everyone is getting into holiday spirit. I thought it'd be fun to throw together a few gift ideas I've found.
