Star sighting 2nd weekend in a row!
celeb sightings during my every day activities. Last weekend while
walking down the street in our hood we walked right by John Turturro
and his chocolate covered son. Ian almost offered the kid a wet wipe
without realizing that it was the child of one of our often quoted
actors (circa the Jesus in The Big Lebowski... "It don't matter to
Jesus....")
Then today, after a successful shopping adventure at my favorite
thrift store, I went to meet Seth, Ian and a friend, Scott, at a
coffee shop. And another celeb sighting... The main actress from
Weeds!! There for a little play that was being performed for kids. I
went outside to take a call from my mom and snuck in a photo (even
though I felt bad doing it... I was quick and sneaky.) I love Weeds,
and it reminded me how much I wish I had episodes I haven't seen yet!

No Impact Week
A couple weeks ago, Seth and I watched the documentary about No Impact Man. (If you've never heard of him, he attempted to live one year without making any impact on the environment while living in New York City... This meant buying nothing new, eventually no electricity, creating no trash, etc.) The documentary made me start thinking about the things I do and what I consume. I would say I try to be a fairly responsible and conscious person when it comes to the environment... Even though, I'm aware that there is more I can do.
A couple weeks ago, my sister-in-law mentioned No Impact Week, which started this Sunday and will go through next Sunday. Having just watched the documentary, I was inspired to look into a little more and see if Seth and I could somehow find a way to have our own sort of No Impact Week.
Although we aren't going to the extremes of No Impact Man, obviously I'm on the computer right now, we are trying to make some changes for the week and hoping that some of them will continue and become new habits. I thought I'd share a few notes about what we have done so far and also what other goals we have. We made our goals with the help of the pdf document they provided with suggestions and tips for each day.
Sunday - The focus was consumption and putting an end to it. Some of this is probably already taken care of, because often times, I get my clothes from the cool thrift stores here in the city. I also try to borrow books from the library or from friends, or I enjoy the finds from the neighborhood stoops. This does make me more conscious of this aspect of my life, and I will continue to find alternatives to buying new. (I follow freecycle and at times find items I'm looking for on there...)
Monday - The focus was trash and trying to create none of it. Seth and I have created trash, but it has been interesting as we have attempted not to the last few days. We've been reflective over the trash that we've created, and I've also shared ways that I've attempted to create less trash... For example, at work I LOVE LOVE LOVE to use sticky notes. In attempt to create less trash and not use sticky notes, I've started reusing paper. I took the stack of paper I've collected and cut it into smaller pieces, stapled it together and use those scraps instead of sticky notes. I've also realized that I often have scraps from food and maybe it would be a good time to look into composting. (This has been in the back of my head for a while, and now I'm setting a deadline that by July we'll have a compost set up...)
Tuesday - The focus is transportation. Seth and I do not own a car and haven't for almost 2 years. We take public transportation as our form of transportation. It would be nice if we could get bikes and bike places instead of using public transit, but with our current living situation, we cannot do that. When the weather is nice, we do try to scoot and skateboard places, but there isn't much else, at this point in our lives that we can really change when it comes to transportation. I do know that, from where I stand right now, I'd love to Never own a car again! (But this probably depends on living situation.)
There are also a few other parts that have not come up yet, but we've already started being more conscious of them: our use of electricity and our use of water. Is anyone else participating in No Impact Week???

I love Spring
I just can't get over how green it is here! I think I take spring in such a funny way - I'm like a small child, experiencing it for the first time... Seth just laughs at me when I point out every tree with its new leaves or ask him 30 times if he love spring as much as I do, if he loves these blooms or these blooms as much as I do!We are off to brunch hopefully for a table in the garden at a place near Seth's little brother's apartment! What are you doing this beautiful Spring day??

Words on Wednesday
Symbols are like words, right?
It's almost late Words post. Forgot to add the photos and schedule this post yesterday.Today was a difficult day for many reasons. I had planned to come home from work and all the extra stress of recent events, change into my favorite pair of jeans, and head to the park to enjoy the record breaking temperatures of April. I did make it, but instead, I sat on the bench a bit numb from unplanned events. What a difference a single moment in time makes, a single decision that plays as a domino-effect to the ones that lead up to now? It's crazy when I start to think about what put me in that spot, it goes back and back and back. Maybe I shouldn't even write of it... but this is my space and this is all I'll say. After this, I'll move forward. (I put the last photo on almost as a request - Please life, stop raining these heartbreaks!) The sun will shine tomorrow. I will enjoy it early.

Park Views
Sunday afternoon was spent playing with our nephew and searching for eggs in the park. We had our own space in the trees. I was a little out of it, because I was stressing about the missing wallet... But it was nice to be a bit distracted and to be outside sitting in the sun and warmth of spring.

Williamsburg Parks on the River
Last week, I headed out to the Williamsburg bridge to scoot across with my sister-in-law and nephew. It was a perfectly beautiful day, and I love love love that bridge! After crossing the bridge into Williamsburg, we headed to the riverside parks just north of the bridge.
I sat on the rocks enjoying the warm sun shining on me, while J and P chipped away at rocks for P's growing collection. I also tried to avoid the random rat I saw running through the rocks (ha ha... out of the corner of my eye, I saw something furry scurrying along. My first thought was Ooo cute, a little animal, until I remembered where I was and realized that little animal was a rat...)
After spending quite some time in the smaller park, we headed to a larger one. I wouldn't have recognized the spot if J wouldn't have pointed it out, but before it was a park, it was a fenced in area that was kind of off limits to public, but with a great view of the night city.
Again, my nephew explored and collected. I read for a bit and people watched. Then we investigated this plant that grew on the river's edge. We even popped a few of those balloon-like bubbles.
This park is a perfect place to spend a warm afternoon and take in the city skyline from across the river.

Until someone loses a wallet. :(Yup. Spent Saturday celebrating a friend's birthday, enjoying the beautiful spring weather, catching up with friends. You can see Seth and I were being completely silly in this photo and were having a great time... Which we did, all day long. And Sunday morning, I awoke to discover I had a missing wallet. Something I've always been afraid would happen. (I actually used to refuse to carry a wallet because I didn't want it to happen... but gave in when I realized I had too many cards and needed to be putting everything in the exact same place every time to prevent the panic I get when something wasn't where I thought it should be.)
You wouldn't believe the stress of trying to get everything replaced (Love that people keep asking me for a photo id... and all I can say is... It was with the wallet.) This is a good sign that I need to get a passport as a back up photo id. It's a good thing I don't have to work until Wednesday, because these two days are being spent replacing my wallet's belongings.
I keep hoping that maybe it will turn up. I've put in reports with various places about missing property. I'm hoping that some good soul found it and is returning it to me, somehow. I'm also thinking long and hard about what bad karma I brought onto myself... and what I need to do differently to keep this energy away. Oooo sigh. At least the sun is shining.

Blooming Trees
My FAVORITE time of year is when the trees start blooming! After having lunch with Seth yesterday, I spent an hour or so reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in Union Square and then decided to head back to Brooklyn to Prospect Park where it wasn't so crowded. I was immediately drawn to the bright pink trees... Who couldn't be though? Aren't they beautiful, especially with that amazing blue sky backdrop!
Dog Day
I love going to Prospect Park in the mornings. It's literally taken over by dogs! There's like some deal where dogs can run free through the lawns in the early morning hours before people start filling in the park.Of course, I left dreaming of owning a dog and thinking back over my dream last night of my brother having 3 dogs... Jersey, the one he actually owns, Binky (a toy yorkie from dreamland), and a dog my parents gave him (for whatever weird reason, it was voted in dreamland that he get this dog from my parents, despite him already having 2 and me having none!)... I always have weird dreams.
